A Dutch bucket system—one of the most effective, scalable, and surprisingly simple hydroponic growing methods around.

So, what is a Dutch bucket?

A Dutch bucket, sometimes called a Bato bucket, is a type of hydroponic growing system designed for large, fruiting plants.

Instead of planting directly in soil, each plant grows in its own bucket filled with an inert growing medium like perlite, coconut coir, expanded clay pellets, or a blend of the three. A drip irrigation line delivers nutrient-rich water directly to each plant's roots.

The excess nutrient solution drains out through a specially designed elbow fitting at the bottom of the bucket and either:

  • Returns to a reservoir to be reused in a recirculating hydroponic system, or

  • Drains away in a non-recirculating setup.

It's clean. It's efficient. And best of all, your plants aren't trying to wrestle nutrients away from weeds. We use dutch buckets to grow tomatoes, broccoli, cucumbers, cilantro (damn that tap root), and flowers like marigolds, zinnias and sunflowers.

Why are they called Dutch buckets?

Like many clever greenhouse innovations, the system became popular through Dutch greenhouse growers, who have spent decades perfecting high-efficiency food production.

The Netherlands may be smaller than many U.S. states, but it's one of the world's agricultural powerhouses. When your country has limited land but a lot of ingenuity, you get really good at growing more food in less space. Dutch buckets are one of those ideas that spread because...well...they work.

What can you grow in a Dutch bucket?

This isn't the system for a tiny patch of lettuce. Dutch buckets shine when growing large plants that produce fruit over a long season.

Some of the best crops include:

  • Eggplant

  • Zucchini

  • Melons

  • Pole/bush beans

How does a Dutch bucket system work?

  2. A pump sends that nutrient solution through drip irrigation lines.

  3. Each bucket receives a slow, steady supply of water and nutrients.

  4. The growing media supports the roots while providing excellent airflow.

  5. Excess solution drains out the bottom, keeping roots from sitting in water.

  6. Depending on the system, the water is either collected and reused or safely drained away.

Are Dutch Buckets better than other hydroponic systems?

That depends on what you're growing and if you have access to electricity for your hydro-garden.

If your goal is lettuce, basil, or spinach, systems like nutrient film technique (NFT) or deep water culture (DWC) may make more sense. But for crops that grow tall, produce fruit, and stay in production for months, Dutch buckets are hard to beat.

They're sturdy, flexible, and built for plants that need a little extra room to stretch out.

Is a Dutch bucket system good for beginners?

Absolutely! When we first got started, we had more success with this method than any of the others we tested.

While there is a little plumbing involved, most Dutch bucket systems are surprisingly forgiving. Once the irrigation is set up and your nutrient solution is dialed in, daily maintenance is relatively simple.

Once you lock in, you’ll spend more time admiring your tomatoes than troubleshooting the system!
