About Us
The future of agriculture is local, sustainable, and integrated with modern technology. By combining hydroponic systems with environmentally responsible growing practices, Fieldless Farm is redefining how fresh food can be produced in Iowa.
Fieldless Farm is an urban farm based in Urbandale, Iowa dedicated to growing fresh, nutrient-rich produce year-round. By combining a Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) system, passive Kratky hydroponics, and Dutch bucket systems, Fieldless Farm maximizes efficiency, conserves water, and produces quality food without the use of synthetic pesticides or herbicides.
A controlled environment agriculture (CEA) approach allows for consistent growth throughout the year, regardless of Iowa's changing seasons. Through precision nutrient management, full-spectrum LED lighting, and carefully monitored growing conditions, the farm is optimized for plant health, flavor, and freshness while using significantly less water than traditional methods.
We’re here for the food
(and the water)
Fieldless Farm was founded by Lindsey Moon and Reid Muxfeldt, whose shared vision for agriculture brings together two very different—but highly complementary—perspectives.
Lindsey is a multimedia producer, journalist and ag marketer with a green thumb. Her fascination with hydroponics began in middle school at Space Camp where she was introduced to the concept of growing plants without soil while learning how astronauts could produce food during long-duration space missions. That experience planted the seed for a lifelong curiosity about controlled-environment agriculture.
Reid grew up on a hog farm in rural western Iowa and brings more than 20 years of experience in conventional agriculture. His career has been built on practical farming knowledge, crop production, and a deep understanding of what it takes to grow food efficiently. His hands-on expertise provides the operational foundation for Fieldless Farm, balancing innovation with a time-tested agri-business mindset.
Together, Lindsey and Reid are driven by a shared commitment to protecting water quality and finding smarter, more sustainable ways to grow food. They believe agriculture should play a leading role in conserving one of our most valuable resources by reducing water use, minimizing pollution, and embracing new growing methods. By combining decades of agricultural experience with modern hydroponic technology, they're building a farm that demonstrates how local food production can be more sustainable, more efficient, and available to Iowa families year-round.
