What are EC and pH? The two numbers every hydroponic grower needs to understand

Hydroponics has a lot of moving parts, and there are two little numbers that can make the difference between a thriving garden and a plant that looks like it has given up on life: EC and pH.

Don’t be intimidated. EC and pH are actually pretty simple once you understand what they're telling you. Think of them as your plants' way of sending you a text message.

EC says: "Hey, do I have enough food?"

pH says: "Hey, can I actually use the food you've given me?"

What Is EC in Hydroponics?

EC stands for electrical conductivity.

In simple terms, EC measures how much dissolved material is in your nutrient solution—specifically, the amount of dissolved salts and minerals your plants can use as nutrients.

Since hydroponic plants don't have soil to act as a nutrient bank, growers have to provide everything plants need through water: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, and Micronutrients.

EC helps growers understand how concentrated that nutrient solution is and how much plant food is available in the water.

Why Does EC Matter?

Plants are picky eaters. Give them too little nutrition, and they struggle. Give them too much, and they get overwhelmed.

The goal is balance.

A properly managed EC level helps plants:

  • Grow efficiently

  • Produce stronger roots

  • Develop healthier leaves

  • Produce more flowers and fruit

  • Avoid nutrient stress

In hydroponics, more nutrients does not mean more growth.

What Happens If EC Is Too Low?

When EC is too low, your plants may not be getting enough nutrients.

Signs can include:

  • Slow growth

  • Pale or yellowing leaves

  • Smaller harvests

  • Weak plants

  • Nutrient deficiencies

What Happens If EC Is Too High?

When EC gets too high, plants can struggle to absorb water.

The nutrient solution becomes too concentrated, which can cause:

  • Leaf burn

  • Wilting

  • Reduced growth

  • Nutrient lockout

Again, more nutrients aren't always better.

What Is pH in Hydroponics?

pH measures how acidic or alkaline your water is.

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14:

  • Below 7 = acidic

  • 7 = neutral

  • Above 7 = alkaline

Most hydroponic plants prefer a slightly acidic environment, generally somewhere around 5.5 to 6.5 pH, although the ideal range depends on the crop.

pH affects nutrient availability. A plant can have all the nutrients it needs sitting right in front of it, but if the pH is wrong, it may not be able to absorb them.

It's like having a fully stocked pantry but forgetting where you put the key to the kitchen.

Why Does pH Matter So Much?

Nutrients behave differently depending on the pH of the water. When pH is in the right range, plants can efficiently absorb essential elements. When pH drifts too high or too low, certain nutrients become harder for plants to access.

When plants can’t access nutrients, this is called nutrient lockout.

A plant may look like it has a deficiency even though the nutrients are technically present. The problem isn't what's in the water. The problem is the plant can't get to it.

What Happens If pH Is Too High?

High pH can make nutrients like:

  • Iron

  • Manganese

  • Phosphorus

less available to plants.

Symptoms may include:

  • Yellow leaves

  • Poor growth

  • Weak plants

  • Signs of nutrient deficiency

What Happens If pH Is Too Low?

A pH that is too low can also create problems, including:

  • Nutrient toxicity

  • Root stress

  • Poor plant development

Plants are surprisingly dramatic about their environment. And honestly? They're not wrong. They've spent millions of years evolving very specific preferences.

How Do You Measure EC and pH?

Most hydroponic growers use digital meters. A pH meter measures acidity and alkalinity. An EC meter measures nutrient concentration. Many growers check these numbers daily because hydroponic systems are incredibly responsive.

Do All Plants Need the Same EC and pH?

Nope. Just like humans have different diets, plants have different preferences.

For example:

  • Lettuce generally prefers lower nutrient levels.

  • Tomatoes and cucumbers typically require higher nutrient concentrations.

  • Strawberries have their own sweet spot, and are very hard to germinate from seed.

Learning your crop's preferences is part of becoming a better grower.
